The art scene is a good reason to visit Munich. The Alte Pinakothek is one of the most important art galleries in the world. Over 800 masterpieces present life from the Middle Ages through the Rococo period and the museum showcases one of the largest collections of Rubens in the world. Nearby, the Pinakothek der Moderne houses five extensive galleries of contemporary paintings, graphics, sculpture, architecture and design. Neue Pinakothek also focuses on outstanding European art and sculpture including a collection of Impressionist works by Monet, Degas and Renoir. The Residence is not a place to lay your head for a night’s sleep. The home of Bavarian dukes and kings for over 500 years, the Residence houses 130 rooms filled with paintings, porcelains, tapestries and furnishing from the best artists of the time.
Beyond these major museums, art networks, studios and small galleries through Munich exhibit and sell works by local artists and students. Check Domagk-Ateliers and Wiede-Fabrik for works by young artists who may be tomorrow’s masters.
